Around the Do Not Call list

I believe that a few credit card companies have been positioning themselves to get around the Federal Do Not Call list.  We recently received a gift card from WalMart that was actually a prepaid Visa, but to activate the card we had to call the number and provide the receipt number, our full name, our address, our phone number, and our social security number.  We declined.  On reading the details of the agreement that comes with the card, there’s fees all over the place, including a yearly fee.

Daily Reflection

Thought I’d share one of my personal fave quotes that I’ve referred to often over the last several years.  It’s from the AA “Big Book,” but don’t let that put you off:

May 1        Healing Heart and Mind

Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact
nature of our wrongs.
- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions p.55

Since it is true that God comes to me through people, I can see that by keeping people at a distance I also keep God at a distance. God is nearer to me than I think and I can experience Him by loving people and allowing people to love me. But I can neither love nor be loved if I allow my secrets to get in the way.
It’s the side of myself that I refuse to look at that rules me. I must be willing to look at the dark side in order to heal my mind and heart because that is the road to freedom. I must walk into darkness to find the light and walk into fear to find peace.
By revealing my secrets — and thereby ridding myself of guilt — I can actually change my thinking; by altering my thinking, I can change myself. My thoughts create my future. What I will be tomorrow is determined by what I think today.

New ‘puter

I built my first machine from parts bought mostly from NewEgg.  The box cost just over $1000, but from what I can find, I’d have to pay close to $3000 to get anything like it prebuilt.

Here’s the parts list and some pics:

The Daedalus Project

Interesting website called The Daedalus Project: the psychology of MMORPGs.  The surveys and updates are closed. The researcher is moving on, but the results of past surveys and analysis are still available

Warhammer Online

Been playing Warhammer Online now.  RL friends stopped playing WoW, and it became tedious, and the most fun I have playing MMOs is playing with people I know in Real Life — I always feel awkward in guild chat with people I don’t really know, partly because I’m a geek when it comes to social skills and partly because I’m not a hard core gamer.

Warhammer, abbreviated WAR for Warhammer Online, Age of Reckoning, is more gritty than WoW; bloodier.  There’s a LOT more PvP, which is the fun part for me.

I play a Marauder class, named Depredator, on the Phoenix Throne server — fun as hell.

Ventrilo and Vista

I found out that if I set Ventrilo to PTT — Push to Talk — it wouldn’t work when playing Warhammer Online in full-screen mode.  The problem has something to do with Vista.

Simple solution: run Ventrilo as Administrator.

problem solved!

Textspoofing for exciteword

So, I got a text from Stacy saying “I’ll check it out,” which was weird since I hadn’t sent him anything to respond to. Then I found another text:

  • Gabriel@zinzang.com
  • (exciteword.com) Lou said you would
  • really want to see that site
  • Jan 17, 8:45pm

Well, I don’t know anyone named Gabriel and had never heard of ZinZang.

WoWin’ it up

Well, kinda. Still on Azgalor — much better server than Aegwynn (IMHO) — more pop, better pop, less trash-talking kids cluttering up general chat.
