The Perfect Game

The perfect game would be an MMO(RPG) with two factions, one that plays like Warhammer and WoW, et al, and the other that plays like PlanetSide and Battlefield, et al.  I thought about a third faction that played like Unreal, but the third faction was a horrible drawback in PlanetSide, so no.

Interesting website called The Daedalus Project: the psychology of MMORPGs.  The surveys and updates are closed. The researcher is moving on, but the results of past surveys and analysis are still available

Warhammer Online

Been playing Warhammer Online now.  RL friends stopped playing WoW, and it became tedious, and the most fun I have playing MMOs is playing with people I know in Real Life — I always feel awkward in guild chat with people I don’t really know, partly because I’m a geek when it comes to social skills and partly because I’m not a hard core gamer.

Warhammer, abbreviated WAR for Warhammer Online, Age of Reckoning, is more gritty than WoW; bloodier.  There’s a LOT more PvP, which is the fun part for me.

I play a Marauder class, named Depredator, on the Phoenix Throne server — fun as hell.

WoWin’ it up

Well, kinda. Still on Azgalor — much better server than Aegwynn (IMHO) — more pop, better pop, less trash-talking kids cluttering up general chat.

Re-WoWed?

OK, so Everquest2 is pretty cool — the PvE stuff is nice and all, but in the few weeks that I’ve been on, there’s really no reason to group.  There was one time (in band camp), where I was camping a NPC spawn and so was someone else, so we grouped just to get the last piece of the Stein of Moggok, but that was it: group up, wait around, kill Prud, disband, /wave.

De-WoWed

I stopped playing World of Warcraft some time ago, after maxing out to level 70.  When I started playing again, after a time away, it was at the urging of my Sister-in-Law and her husband who had created a guild.  They were already level 70, so I pushed to catch up, and the most fun was chatting with everyone rather than playing together — in WoW it’s bad for a high-level to group with lower levels because the lower levels do not receive enough points when working together — that is, that the higher level player contributes so much to the fighting that it wouldn’t be fair for the lowbie to get the same points.

Playing on a lightbeam

OK, we just got Verizon Fios installed and it’s awesome.  We got the package deal with Internet, TV and phone all for less than what we were paying to Comcast, local phone service, and ATT long distance.  Everything comes into the house on a fiber-optic cable and is converted to run on the existing wiring for the phone, and on coax cable for the internet and TV.

Steam Unable to Connect

08/05/2008

Stupid Steam (from Valve [it's for games]).

Said it “appears that you have no connection to the internet,” even though I did. That started two days ago. I thought surely it was my Comcast connection, but everything else appeared fine. Worked on it a couple of hours a day. Looked for Spyware, Adware, Viruses, even uninstalled AVG anti-virus on the advice of Valve (even though Steam worked fine with AVG before).

Finally, I came across this advice: delete clientregistry.blob, steam.dll and steamclient.dll from the steam folder and restart Steam. It worked! Just make sure you have your password, because it will download and update and ask for your username and password again.

Hallelulah!
